White Sox' Epic Comeback Makes History Monday

The Chicago White Sox haven't had much to cheer about lately, but their epic comeback on Monday night certainly qualifies

Monday night got off to an awful start for the Chicago White Sox, as James Shields surrendered seven early runs, but the team managed to send their fans home happy as they scored a come-from-behind victory at U.S. Cellular Field.

The win, which brought Chicago’s record back to the .500 mark at 32-32, saw plenty of fireworks, including home runs from Jose Abreu and Dioner Navarro. It also saw the White Sox accomplish something that they haven’t done since June of 2002: they came from seven or more runs down to win a game.

The last time they accomplished the feat was against the Chicago Cubs, in a game played on the south side. On that day the White Sox actually trailed 8-0 against the Cubs, with Alex Gonzalez and Corey Patterson both slugging home runs off of starting pitcher Dan Wright to get the North Siders out to a massive lead.

Then, slowly but surely, the White Sox clawed their way back into the game.

Paul Konerko hit two home runs, including one off of Kerry Wood, and he also clubbed a double to help the White Sox cause. Magglio Ordonez racked up three RBI and Kenny Lofton helped set the table with four walks as the South Siders came back to win 13-9 in a wild game.

Monday’s game followed a similar script. After the Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead, Abreu and Navarro homered in back-to-back innings to make it a 7-3 game. Abreu later added an RBI single to trim the Detroit lead to three runs, and a Brett Lawrie RBI single made it a 7-6 game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The teams traded runs in the sixth inning, but a Jose Iglesias sacrifice bunt made it a 9-7 game in the ninth inning. Lawrie managed to get another RBI to make it 9-8 in the bottom of the frame, and Avisail Garcia hammered an RBI single to tie things up at 9-9.

Finally, Adam Eaton finished off the rally with an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning, scoring J.B. Shuck to win the game for the White Sox.
