Versteeg Has Surgery on Broken Hand

The Hawks announced the surgery during their 2-0 loss to the Avalanche

While the Chicago Blackhawks’ offense was trying fruitlessly to get the puck past Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov on Tuesday night, the team made some news off the ice as well.

Kris Versteeg, who has been out of the Blackhawks’ lineup since sustaining a hand injury during the Winter Classic on January 1, had surgery on Tuesday, the team announced in a press release. Here is what Blackhawks Head Team Physician Dr. Michael Terry had to say:

“Kris Versteeg underwent a procedure today to further stabilize a metacarpal fracture in his left hand. We do not anticipate any significant changes in his return to play timetable and we continue to anticipate a full recovery.”

The team has said that Versteeg will miss about a month with the injury, meaning that he will be back sometime after the All-Star break at the end of January. The team will go on a seven game road trip following the break, so Versteeg could potentially return for the latter part of it as the team returns to the Midwest after a west coast sojourn against the Ducks, Kings, and Sharks.
