VanDyk Beats Fearnley By 1 Second To Win Chicago Marathon Wheelchair Race

"It was pretty exciting," Ernst VanDyk said

Ernst VanDyk of South Africa beat Kurt Fearnley of Australia by one second to win the 2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon men's wheelchair race.

"It was pretty exciting," VanDyk said. "We were together the whole way, playing games, playing cat and mouse."

It came down to one second. A burst of energy at the end pushed VanDyk past the finish and just beyond Fearnley.

"I had to dig a little bit more and attacked the corner with good speed," he said after the race.

Though VanDyk, who won the Boston Marathon nine times, prides himself in hilly races, he counts this flat and fast race among his favorites.
