Power rankings. You hate them. They’re so arbitrary and pointless, especially when they include all 32 NFL teams. All you want to know after a good week of NFL action is who the bestest team in the NFL right now, and which one is the absolute worst. The one so awful, it might even be worse than that Colin Cowherd sitcom currently being proposed. That’s why we have TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE NFL, where we go to great lengths to tell you who’s the top dog in football right now, this very minute. LET’S GO!
THE TOP: New England Patriots
I wanted to put the Falcons here, just for the sake of having a fun new team in the top slot every week. But the Pats went into Pittsburgh and crushed a suddenly reeling Steelers outfit, and I find that hard to overlook.
The cliché when Randy Moss left town was that New England was finally able to get back to boring-but-winning football. But that’s not true. The truth is that Moss’ presence on this team caused a great many of us to overlook the astounding depth of this offense. Two talented rookie tight ends. A gifted kick returner. A solid-if-unspectacular tailback in BenJarvus Green-Ellis. There’s still plenty of talent here, and it was out in full force last night. Now the Pats play Indianapolis next week, and while other teams have had their moment in the AFC this year, I’m starting to get that feeling that the two teams there in the end will be the two teams that are always there in the end.
THE BOTTOM: Carolina Panthers
Now that Dallas is out of Tank Mode, I think we need to turn our attention to the flaming Hindenburg currently crashing down in Charlotte.
This team is atrocious. What’s more, not only are the players quitting, but the coach already has one foot out the door. Jay Glazer reported on the radio this weekend that the Panthers already cut payroll in anticipation of next year’s lockout, and that John Fox had his staff budget cut. Fox already took an underhanded swipe at the team’s personnel department. When he leaves at the end of this season, I’m not even sure the Panthers will bother replacing him. They may just leave the position vacant, and get by on having the team coached by a cardboard cutout of Al Pacino. They don’t care at all about winning this year, and man it’s showing. The Panthers are the worst team in football.
