“Teddy Goalsevelt” Needs Fans' Help to Stay in Brazil

A patriotic World Cup fan from Chicago whose impersonation of Teddy Roosevelt—aka “Teddy Goalsevelt”-- brought him viral fame following the U.S.-Portugal match Sunday, is asking for help from his fans.

The man behind the glasses, Mike D’Amico, had only planned to stay in Brazil through the U.S.-Germany game, but his employer, Chicago-based advertising agency Cavalry, is asking for help from fans to extend his stay if the U.S. advances.

“If fans are willing to help the legend of Teddy Goalsevelt continue by donating, his persona will live on through the knockout stage,” the company said in a statement.

Cavalry set up a fundraising page, hoping to raise $5,000 to keep D’Amico in Brazil.

“We here at Cavalry, the advertising agency where Teddy [Mike D’Amico] works, see him as the team’s mascot now. And we don’t think we’re alone,” the GoFundMe page reads. “Don’t give for us. Give for your country!”

The advertising company said it plans to match donations up to $2,500.

The fundraiser has already garnered $1,956 in less than 20 hours.
