Rizzo, Arrieta, Bryant All Receive NL MVP Votes

The Chicago Cubs weren’t able to hit a grand slam during awards season, but they can take comfort in the high finishes of several of their best players in National League MVP voting.

Anthony Rizzo finished just outside of the top-three vote getters, grabbing a fourth place finish. He got three second place votes and four third place votes among the BBWAA members that voted, finishing just 13 points behind Reds first baseman Joey Votto.

Rizzo wasn’t the only Cubs player that received some love in the voting results. Jake Arrieta, who took home the National League Cy Young Award on Wednesday, finished just outside of the top five in voting, finishing just five points behind Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen. Arrieta scored five second place votes, and also got seven eighth place votes to help boost his total score.

The Cubs did have one other player finish with votes to his name, as third baseman Kris Bryant finished just outside of the top 10 in 11th place. Bryant, who won National League Rookie of the Year honors on Monday, received one third place vote and one fifth place vote.

Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper became the first player in the history of the organization to win the award and did so unanimously, grabbing all 30 first place votes. Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt grabbed 18 second place votes and finished in second place in the voting, followed by Votto, Rizzo, and McCutchen.

No Cubs player has won National League MVP honors since Sammy Sosa won the trophy in 1998, when he blasted 66 home runs and led the team to a playoff berth.
