White Sox Acquire James Shields in Trade With Padres

The Chicago White Sox have been looking to bolster their pitching rotation ever since they sent John Danks packing earlier this season, and they now have as they've added a veteran arm to the mix.

That pitcher is James Shields, who will come over to Chicago from the San Diego Padres. He has a 2-7 record so far this season, but his career has been a solid one as he holds a 3.76 career ERA and a record of 129-104 in 11 big league seasons.

In the deal, the White Sox will send pitcher Erik Johnson and infielder Fernando Tatis, Jr. to the Padres.

The Sox will also receive $30 million in cash from the Padres to help offset the remaining money on Shields' deal, according to CBS Chicago's Bruce Levine. Shields is still owed $58 million for the remaining three-plus seasons on his contract.

The Shields deal was first reported by CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, and later corroborated by Chris Cotillo of SB Nation as well as Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago.
