Perfect timing, Mr. Buerhle.
Thank you, Mark Buehrle.
Nothing like a perfect game to trump our shame from the bad press we've had attached to our city for the last seven months. You know. Drew. Rod. Roland.
In just 2 hours and 3 minutes, Chicago became synonymous with cool again. At least cool by Buehrle association.
And it looks like the afterglow continues. The all-star White Sox pitcher will reportedly do the "Top 10" on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman with teammates Dewayne Wise and Josh Fields Monday night.
The most notable of the nearly 80 kudos Buerhle received after pitching a perfect game Thursday came from his new BFF, the president. Unfazed by the potential perceived slight of having his visit to Chicago be eclipsed in the media, President Barack Obama took a break from healthcare reform and political fundraising to call and say congratulations to the pitcher of his favorite team.
The 30-year-old has now joined the likes of Randy Johnson, Sandy Koufax and Cy Young for pitching a perfect game -- and two no-hitters.
"I have to do a lot more in this game to be thought of in that category," Buehrle told the Tribune when asked if he is qualified for the Hall of Fame. "It's an honor for people to even mention that."
