CPS' Orr High School Basketball Team Forfeits Games Due to Ineligible Player

Coach Louis Adams was suspended during CPS investigation, spokeswoman says

The Orr Academy High School Spartan basketball team has forfeited games in the 2014-15 regular season that included an ineligible player but will continue to play in the Red West Playoffs, a Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman told NBC Chicago.

The player who was found to be ineligible has been suspended for the remainder of the season, and the team's basketball coach, Louis Adams, was suspended from coaching until the investigation concluded, CPS Deputy Press Secretary Lauren Huffman said.

Adams will resume coaching when Orr plays Uplift H.S. in Saturday's Red West Playoffs quarter finals.

Huffman said playoff competition does not depend on the regular season rankings.

Similar action was taken against the Curie Metropolitan High School boys varsity basketball team after seven players were found to be ineligible. The team was stripped of its 24 wins this season and the Chicago high school championship title.

"CPS athletic programs are intended to help students develop a strong work ethic, team-work mentality and leadership skills--but our top priority will always be providing students with high-quality academic instruction," Huffman said in a statement.

She said athletic directors going forward are required to collect eligibility forms on a weekly basis and submit them to CPS' Department of Sports Administration.
