CHICAGO - OCTOBER 01: Fans stand outside Wrigley Field under the famous marquee, which reads "Welcome to the National League Division Series" prior to the Chicago Cubs hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game One of the NLDS during the 2008 MLB Playoffs at Wrigley Field on October 1, 2008 in Chicago, Illinois. Forget the chants of “take me out to the ballgame.” For peddlers surrounding Wrigley Field, it’s more like “take them out OF the ballgame.”
All peddlers would be banned from sidewalks surrounding Wrigley Field within a two-block area if a new proposal introduced at Tuesday’s City Council meeting is passed.
Wrigley Field is included in Ald. Thomas Tunney’s 44th Ward. Tunney sponsored the measure to increase the space around the ballpark where it would be illegal to sell food, products or merchandise from a cart, table or other temporary stand.
But what about Wrigley Field tradition? What about game day camaraderie?
“It’s a public safety issue,” Tunney told the Chicago Breaking News Center. “You can’t walk to the park.”
No three-strike policy here; a ban is a ban, and peddlers could be ousted.
So much for drunken, post-game impulse buys.
