The plan all week had been for Luol Deng to return to the Bulls lineup on Friday night against the Wizards, and up until Wednesday Luol had been on board with the plan, saying he felt he'd be back. Then Thursday came around and Deng had changed his mind. His ankle wasn't fully healed, and he thought he'd be better off sitting out a few more days. It's hard to argue with this because nobody knows Luol's body better than he does, so it's better to just take his word for it.
Well, Lu didn't play on Friday night -- though the Bulls won anyway -- but now he's hopeful that he'll be able to return to action on Monday night when the Portland Trailblazers come to the United Center. Before he does that though, he'd like the Chicago Tribune to know that he's not very happy with them for "misquoting" him. You see, there was a story on the Trib's website yesterday that said Luol wouldn't return until he felt he was 100% healthy, but now Lu is saying he never said that. Here's a quote from the Daily Herald.
"If I feel like I'm capable of helping the team, then I would do it," he said. "When I said I'm going to wait until I was 100 percent, I didn't mean 100 percent exactly. Now here is what Luol told the Tribune on Thursday."I didn't say I was going to wait until I'm 100 percent; I just meant when I'm able to play out there and do something. I think everyone knows if I could go out there, I'd do it. In the past, I had times when I came back early and it kind of affected something else."
"Most likely, I probably won't be able to go [Friday]," Deng said. "I'm pretty close. But coming back and not being 100 percent isn't going to help the team. I know we need to start winning, but I don't want to be favoring it."So in one sentence Luol says that when he's not 100% he doesn't help the team, and in the other sentence he says he doesn't want to come back until he's able to help the team, which only happens when he's 100% healthy. But he never said he's not going to play until he's 100%! Let's not put words in his mouth.
Maybe Lu should have spent more than one season at Duke and taken a couple more math classes. Some English probably wouldn't hurt either.
