Jackie Robinson West Advances in Little League World Series

Chicago team tops Rhode Island 8-7

It was win or go home for the Jackie Robinson West All-Stars, but the pride of Chicago chose the former, beating Rhode Island 8-7 in a Little League World Series game Monday.

Who else but Pierce Jones -- who hit three home runs in the opening game last week -- set the pace early for Jackie Robinson, leading off the game with a home run on the third pitch of the game.

Trey Hondras showed he has some pop at the plate as well, ripping a three-run homer to put Chicago up 4-2 in the second.

Rhode Island proved to be extra resilient, scoring five runs in the third inning to take the lead 7-6.

But Jackie Robinson kept coming, storming back to take an 8-7 lead with Joshua Houston tiebreaking RBI single in the fifth inning.

Closer Marquis Jackson held off Cumberland and gave Chicago the victory.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel issued the following statement after Monday's win:

"Tonight's win underscores Jackie Robinson West's unparalleled strength and resilience; I've said it before and I've said it again- never bet against Chicago's kids. With their positive attitude and hard work, the All Stars and Coach Darold Butler have set a remarkable example for all of Chicago, and we as a City could not be prouder of them. I join all of Chicago in wishing them the best of luck tomorrow, and as evidenced by the watch parties that have drawn hundreds of Chicagoans, it's safe to say the whole City will continue to root for them tomorrow."

The team plays Tuesday night against Pearland, Texas at 6:30 p.m. Emanuel announced another watch party will be held at Jackie Robinson Field.
