3 Denver Broncos Team Buses Collide, Injure CHP Officer on Highway 101 in Sunnyvale

Three Denver Broncos team buses collided with each other in Sunnyvale shortly after leaving a Super Bowl 50 practice session Monday.

California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers were providing a security escort for the team when they encountered slow moving traffic around 1:45 p.m. on southbound U.S. Highway 101 near State Route 237, according to the CHP.

A preliminary investigation shows that a Toyota RAV-4 driver may have made an unsafe turn. The two vehicles leading the motorcade were able to avoid colliding, but the three buses that followed them were not.

None of the players were injured but one bus was disabled and had to be towed from the scene, the CHP said. The passengers on that bus hopped aboard one of the other team buses and the Broncos players continued to their hotel.

A CHP motorcycle officer, who was involved in the collision, was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. He was clipped by one of the Broncos' buses as a result of crash, according to the CHP.

Players from both the Broncos and the Carolina Panthers are slated to attend Super Bowl Opening Night at SAP Center in San Jose later Monday evening.
