Chicago Cubs To Accept Digital Tickets This Season

Electronic tickets stored in Apple's Passbook now redeemable at Wrigley Field

Cubs fans upset about the team eliminating the annual two-hour preseason window to buy single-game tickets can take comfort in technology.

The team is making it easier for fans to buy and store tickets with the help of Apple's Passbook. The smartphone app, released last year, lets customers store digital tickets in their phones and, in the Cubs' case, redeem them at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs are one of 13 Major League Baseball teams to accept the electronic tickets using Passport. The White Sox did not opt into the program.

The team announced Tuesday that this year’s two-hour preseason window, scheduled for 8 a.m. March 8 at the Wrigley Field ticket office, will be its last. The team said issues involved with the planned Wrigley renovation project as well as increased use by fans of online purchasing led to the decision.

Fans willing to pay 15-percent or 20-percent surcharges to avoid waiting in line for tickets on March 8 can get a jump on the process by going online March 6, starting at noon.

Those using a MasterCard pay the 15-percent "premium." Everybody else pays 20.
