Cubs Could Steal Home-Field Advantage for Wild Card Game

The Chicago Cubs are playing their final game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon, but there is a lot more at stake than just a victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

That’s because the Cubs are in a position to potentially grab home-field advantage for Wednesday’s wild card game. They would need to win their game against the Brewers up at Miller Park, and they would also need the Pittsburgh Pirates to lose to the Cincinnati Reds when those two teams square off on the season’s final day.

If the Pirates lose and the Cubs win, both teams would finish the season with 97 victories, but the Cubs would get home-field advantage by virtue of their superior head-to-head record against this Pirates as Chicago has won 11 of the 19 meetings between the teams this season.

If the Pirates win or the Cubs lose, then Wednesday’s one-game wild card playoff will take place at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Even if the Cubs don’t end up getting home-field advantage for the winner-take-all game, they still will go into it with plenty of confidence, as they have the league’s best road record this season.
