Cubs Make History With Tuesday Win Over Cardinals

If the Chicago Cubs can beat the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night, it would be an achievement worth celebrating, but it would be even more significant from a historical perspective

The Chicago Cubs have proven that they are willing and able to make history, and on Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals, they did something they've never done before:

Clinch a playoff series victory at Wrigley Field.

With their 6-4 win over the Cardinals, the Cubs wrapped up the NLDS and punched a ticket to the NLCS for the first time since 2003. The win marks the first time that the Cubs have ever advanced thanks to a victory at Wrigley Field, and it marks only the fourth time in team history that they've won a postseason series overall.

When they won the 1907 and 1908 World Series against the Detroit Tigers, they clinched the title while playing at Bennett Park in Michigan, rather than at the West Side Grounds that they called home in Chicago.

It took another 95 years (and a move into Wrigley Field) for the Cubs to win another postseason series, but the 2003 NLDS was also meant to be won at a place other than the Friendly Confines. The Cubs did have an opportunity to wrap up the series at home, but they failed to do so before ultimately clinching the series victory at Atlanta’s Turner Field in a winner-take-all Game 5.

Over the last 112 years, the Cubs have only had four opportunities to win a series on their home field.

Their first chance came in the 1945 Fall Classic, when they battled the Tigers in a deciding Game 7. In front of a packed house (minus one upset goat and his owner), the Cubs fell 9-3 to the Tigers, and they haven’t been back to the World Series since.

The Cubs had three different opportunities to clinch series victories on their home field during the 2003 playoffs, but they came up short each time. They lost 6-4 to the Braves in Game 4 of the NLDS that season, and they lost Games 6 and 7 of the NLCS against the Florida Marlins, dropping 8-3 and 9-6 decisions in those games, respectively.

As this team has repeatedly shown time and again, they are not averse to making history. Their wild card game win over the Pirates marked the first time that they had ever won a playoff game on October 7, and they snapped a four-game losing streak in games played on October 12 that dated all the way back to the 1907 World Series when they beat the Cardinals on Monday night at Wrigley Field.
