The Chicago Cubs said they "missed the mark" in providing fans with adequate restroom facilities at Wrigley Field for Sunday night's Opening Day game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
"Opening Day at Wrigley Field has always brought challenges with wait times and tonight was particularly extreme," Cubs spokesman Julian Green told NBC Chicago via email.
Frustrated fans posted photos to social media of the long lines with which they were met when nature called.
"The lines were obnoxiously long compared to what you would normally get," said Cubs fan Russ Stubenruch, who described the lines as "sections long."
Fans said they missed innings of the game just waiting in line.
Green said two bathrooms in the upper deck of the stadium were out of order, temporarily forcing fans to lower levels that were already experiencing long wait times.
"With 35,000 fans showing up in the ballpark tonight, we were simply not prepared to handle guests during peak periods," Green said. "We have high standards for service and we missed the mark tonight."

Green said team officials plan to supplement the existing restrooms with additional portable units for future games and that they will continue to monitor wait times.
The Cubs lost the home opener to the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0. The next game is scheduled for Tuesday.
