Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw Makes History in Shutout Win Over Cubs

It isn't often that a player joins the immortal Babe Ruth in an historically exclusive club, but that's exactly what Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw did on Sunday with his win over the Chicago Cubs

Things didn’t go according to plan for the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night, as the Los Angeles Dodgers walked out of Wrigley Field with a 1-0 victory and with the National League Championship Series tied at one game apiece.

The game was punctuated by a stellar pitching performance by Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw. In seven innings of work, Kershaw allowed just two hits and allowed zero runs, and Kenley Jansen slammed the door as an Adrian Gonzalez home run represented all of the scoring in the contest.

With his performance, Kershaw joined an incredibly exclusive club.

In the long history of the Cubs, they have only lost a 1-0 game in a playoff game on two occasions. The pitcher who beat the Cubs on that fateful day during the 1918 World Series against the Boston Red Sox? None other than immortal Hall of Famer Babe Ruth.

The game was also historic because it marked the first time that the Cubs have lost a 1-0 postseason game at Wrigley Field. The Cubs were the home team for that 1918 showdown with the Red Sox, but during those days the Cubs didn’t play playoff games at the Friendly Confines. Instead, they played that game against Boston at the original Comiskey Park.

The Cubs were shutout for only the fifth time in their postseason history on Sunday night, and fans may not want to hear it, but history isn’t on their side in this regard.

In the four previous series in which the Cubs have been shutout in a playoff game, they’ve managed to win only one series, the 2015 NLDS against the St. Louis Cardinals.
