Chelios Escapes DUI Charge

Former Blackhawk found guilty on lesser charges

Former Chicago Blackhawks star Chris Chelios caught a break in an Illinois courtroom Wednesday.

Drunken driving charges were dropped Wednesday in connection with a traffic incident in Westmont last year.

The 48-year-old hockey player was found guilty of improper lane usage and speeding, Chicago Breaking News reported, fined $500 and put on six months of conditional discharge.

After viewing video of the incident from police, the judge determined there was insufficient evidence to charge Chelios with DUI.

Consider it a day of mixed news for a man who has played in more NHL games than any other American-born player. Chelios has been playing with the Atlanta Thrashers NHL team since March 10, but was sent back down to the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League on Wednesday.

Chelios has won three Stanley Cups and was a three-time winner of the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman.
