Soldiers Get Super Bowl Dispensation

Alcohol is normally prohibited by the military in Iraq, but soldiers will enjoy a break from the rules on Super Bowl Sunday with Schlitz beer and Lou Malnati's pizza.
On Super Bowl Sunday, millions of Americans will be enjoying salty snacks and drinking sudsy beers. But what about our brave men and women in Iraq?
Alcohol is strictly forbidden by the American military in Iraq and Afghanistan. But General Raymond Odierno, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, issued a waiver earlier this month allowing the soldiers to drink beer on February 1, Super Bowl Sunday.
While the soldiers certainly deserve this break from the rules, officials want to make it clear that they won't be partying irresponsibly. Each person will only be allowed two beers, and drinking will be limited to dining areas.
Louis Glunz Beer Inc., a Lincolnwood distributor, is sending over 4,000 bottles of Schlitz beer to troops in Iraq. The free suds, along with 2,000 pizzas from Lou Malnati's, will be packed up Friday and flown overseas courtesy of DHL, an international express mail service.
