The Chicago Cubs got over the century mark in wins on Monday night with a victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, but one of their star players also hit a significant milestone in his career that made him a little lighter in the wallet.
That player is third baseman Kris Bryant, who went over the century mark in RBI for the season with a two run homer against the Pirates. The long ball gave Bryant 39 home runs and 101 RBI on the season, marking the first time in his short career that he has driven in 100 or more RBI in a single season.
The reason that Bryant’s checkbook took a hit on Monday is because of a wager that he made with outfielder Chris Coghlan. Coghlan batted lead-off in Monday’s game, and Bryant gave him some incentive to be on-base in the contest.
“I told him, ‘if you score on my 100th RBI, I’ll give you all the money in my wallet,’” Bryant told the Chicago Tribune.
That is exactly what happened, as Coghlan was on-base when Bryant launched a home run over the fence at PNC Park and put himself into the century club for RBI in a season.
Unfortunately for fans, there is one bit of information that isn’t publicly available: how much money was involved in the transaction. With endorsement deals from companies like Red Bull, Adidas, and Express, one would imagine that Coghlan will get something cool out of the deal regardless of how much money Bryant was carrying with him Monday.
