Despite his knack for drafting good young talent, GM Dale Tallon appears to have been fired by the Blackhawks.
The team you constructed nearly doubles its point total in one season, recaptures the heart of an entire city after years of irrelevancy, and flirts with a berth in the Stanley Cup finals. So what's your prize Dale Tallon? Well, it appears the Chicago Blackhawks general manager has been rewarded with a pink slip.
Numerous outlets are reporting that Tallon -- the man responsible for drafting young stars like Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews -- was let go Monday night. Tallon has reportedly been replaced by assistant GM of hockey operations Stan Bowman, son of legendary coach Scotty Bowman and a senior advisor to the team.
Tallon's fate may have been sealed last week when he failed to submit qualifying offers to eight restricted free agents by the deadline, including cornerstone players Kris Versteeg and Cam Barker. The mistake meant that the players would have gone from being restricted to unrestricted free agents, and even though they were all resigned, the mistake likely cost the team millions of dollars.
At the time, Tallon called it a mistake that will "never happen again." Well, now we know it could -- just not on his watch.
