Sox Trade Matt Thornton For Outfield Prospect

Left-handed reliever headed to Red Sox

The Chicago White Sox send left-handed reliever Matt Thornton and cash considerations to the Red Sox on Friday night in exchange for minor leage outfielder Brandon Jacobs.

Thornton was 0-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 40 games with the White Sox this season. Jacobs, 22, is hitting .247 with 25 doubles, 11 home runs, 44 RBIs, 46 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in Class A Salem and Double-A Portland.

According to whitesox.com, Thornton ranks among Chicago's all-time relief leaders in appearances (1st), holds (1st), strikeouts (2nd), wins (T-3rd) and strikeouts (5th).

More trades are expected for the underachieving White Sox this season.
