The Vietnam War-era veteran represented Illinois' 17th congressional district for more than two decades, from 1983 to 2006. He announced he wouldn't seek re-election, citing his deteriorating health, and left office in January 2007.
As a congressman, he fought for the rights of veterans, including pushing legislation to help those exposed to Agent Orange.
He is survived by his three brothers.
