County Commissioner Bridget Gainer Won't Run for Mayor of Chicago

Gainer has served as a county commissioner since 2009

Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer will not be joining the crowded field trying to unseat Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, as she revealed Saturday that she will not run for the office.

Gainer confirmed the news to NBC 5 on Saturday afternoon, saying that she will not join the field of 10 candidates running in next year’s mayoral election.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Gainer says that she can have more of an impact working with the county than by jumping into the mayoral race.

“I have big and ambitious ideas for the city, whether it is scaling neighborhood development, creating a whole new line of jobs through the apprentice program, and there’s more,” she told the newspaper. “I can do those things on the outside, and for me, that’s what I’m going to focus on right now.”

Gainer has served as a county commissioner since 2009.
