Former Alderman Bernard Stone Dead at 87

Former Chicago alderman Bernard Stone died early Monday at the age of 87.

Confirmation of his death came from one of his daughters, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

"He loved serving the people, he loved his job. He lived his job," said daughter Ilana Feketitsch.

Feketitsch said the death was the result of a weekend fall.

"He unapologetically believed in candor and personal loyalty. And -- in the best sense of the word -- he stood for many of the old-fashioned principles of the Democratic Party and Chicago politics," Ald. Edward Burke said in a statement. "If you were his friend, you were his friend to the end. I am proud of the close bond that we shared during his many years on the floor of the City Council. Bernie will be truly missed by his many colleagues at City Hall and everyone who had the privilege to have known him."

Stone served nearly four decades in office, and one time credited his longevity to his being "full of pee and vinegar."
