Vermont Town Elects Man Who Died a Day Before

Voters were not told about Kevin Tarrant's death because of state campaign laws in Vt.

Voters in the Vermont town of Underhill have elected a man to serve on the select board who died a day before the town meeting vote.

Voters were not told Tuesday about Kevin Tarrant's death because of state campaign laws.

The 55-year-old Tarrant collapsed at his home Monday morning.

The town clerk told the Burlington Free Press that campaigning or discussing candidates within a polling place is prohibited by state law. The annual town meeting took place in the gym at the Browns River School, which has voting booths.

Announcing Tarrant's death at the meeting could be seen as urging voters to vote a certain way.

The Underhill Select Board is now trying to figure out how to fill the seat.
