Rauner Plans to Appoint Police Commander Leo Schmitz for State Police Job

The director of the Illinois State Police is resigning, and a Chicago police commander could take over the position.

NBC 5 has learned that Governor-Elect Bruce Rauner plans to appoint Chicago Police Commander Leo Schmitz to the position. If selected, Schmitz will fill the position previously held by Hiram Grau.

Grau is one of many state directors expected to resign in the new Rauner administration. The director of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, Bobbie Gregg, has already confirmed she's leaving.

Schmitz has Rauner's approval, but the appointment will need to be confirmed by the Illinois State Senate before he can take the position.
