Rauner, Lawmakers to Meet for Long-Awaited Budget Summit

Gov. Bruce Rauner is scheduled to meet with other lawmakers, including House Speaker Michael Madigan, for a long-awaited and highly publicized budget summit in Springfield on Tuesday.

The public meeting, which will be held at the State Capitol, was originally scheduled for Nov. 18, but a few days before the meeting Madigan said he would be unable to attend due to an out-of-state family funeral. Instead of continuing without Madigan, Rauner rescheduled the event.

Earlier this month, Rauner said he believes the meeting should be open to the public for opening statements by him and other leaders but then private for budget negotiations. It was originally pitched as a public meeting.

Rauner is scheduled to open the meeting followed by 10-minute speeches from each leader. The governor will then conclude this part of the meeting before it becomes private.

The Tuesday meeting will mark the beginning of the sixth month of the budget impasse.
