Schumer Predicts ‘Obamacare' Will Survive

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer predicted Monday that the Affordable Care Act will survive amid what he called a White House and GOP in disarray.

Schumer said the law, also referred to as "Obamacare," will not be repealed. He said the GOP so far has not been able to "pick off" a single Democratic lawmaker to support repeal.

"They can't agree on a timeline, or even what to replace it with," Schumer said.

Schumer spoke at the National Press Club along with Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., in advance of President Donald Trump's speech Tuesday to a joint session of Congress.

The two leaders of congressional Democrats aimed to depict Trump's first 40 days in office as unsuccessful with Schumer saying that the main accomplishment of the president and Republicans has been to undo a few regulations that were an "afterthought" of the Obama administration.

Schumer said that Democrats are "united and on offense. We're doing a lot better than we thought."

Pelosi, asked about Trump's budget proposal at the National Press Club Monday, said she hasn't seen "all the particulars." But she said that by looking at the personalities in his administration who are shaping the document, she expected cuts in grants for medical researchers and in Head Start support for low-income kids.
