Obama Awards Medal of Honor to Family of Fallen Soldier

President Obama awarded his first Medal of Honor to a fallen soldier who was killed trying to save a wounded comrade in Afghanistan.

The president presented the prestigious award to the parents of Sgt. First Class Jared Monti, 30, who was killed in the mountains of Afghanistan in 2006 by a rocket-propelled grenade as he tried to rescue a fellow soldier.

The White House said Monti showed "conspicuous gallantry" and went above the call of duty. He was previously awarded a Bronze Star, Purple Hearth, five Army Commendation Medals, four Army Achievement Medals and three National Defense Service Medals.
