Date Set for Iran to Join Nuke Talks With U.S.

Iran ready to join 6-party talks on nukes

Iran will join the U.S. and other members of the United Nations Security Council at the negotiation table next month in what the Obama administration hopes will lead to progress on ending Iranian support for militants that fight Israel, help with Afghanistan and on getting the regime in Tehran to stop enriching uranium, according to reports.

The October 1 event, at a location to be determined, will represent the first time in more than a year that Iran has sat down with negotiators from the U.S., China, Russia, France, the U.K. and Germany.

Iran has said it is willing to discuss elements of its nuclear program and other security and development issues, The Wall Street Journal reported. But it has refused so far to stop enriching uranium or give up its nuclear “rights.”

"We plan to address this issue of their not living up to their obligations head on," U.S. State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told the Journal. "We are not planning on starting a whole new process here."
