Michelle Obama, San Antonio Mayor to Open DNC

First Lady received high praise for her speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver

First lady Michelle Obama and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro are set to open the Democratic National Convention on Sept. 4.

Castro will make the keynote speech that evening at the Time Warner Cable Arena, according to organizers.

Obama, a Chicago native, received high praise for her speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Convention Chairman Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said he hopes Obama will be able to paint conventioneers a picture of Obama from a unique and domestic viewpoint during her speech.

Castro, who is in his second term as San Antonio mayor, has experience in implementing a "middle out" economy in the city, that will make him credible as a convention speaker, Villaraigosa said.

Former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden are already set to make addresses at the convention, on Sept. 5 and Sept. 6, respectively.

Biden will formally introduce President Obama on Sept. 6, after which Obama will deliver his acceptance address.

The Democratic National Convention is being held in Charlotte, N.C.
