The Marine Corps is banning dogs it has determined are dangerous.

The ban goes into effect in the year 2012 and applies to Marine Corps bases worldwide, including Camp Pendleton. The new policy specifically outlaws pure-bred and mixed-breed pit bulls, Rottweilers and wolf hybrids.

The move comes in the wake of an attack on a 3-year-old boy, who was killed by a pit-bull at Camp Lejune in North Carolina.

Current owners of the banned breeds are allowed to keep them until September 2012 if the dog passes the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test.
