U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez is collecting signatures to get his name on the ballot as a mayoral candidate, but he won't yet say he's officially running for the city's top job.

On Sunday, Gutierrez had about 150 volunteers collecting signatures as the Mexican Independence Day festivities.  Gutierrez admitted that it's his community base, and it seems he couldn't pass up the opportunity to get his name in their minds as a potential candidate for mayor.

"I'll make a decision about making an announcement for mayor sometime in the near future, but today what I'd like to see is, can a candidate in one day get the requisite 12,500 signatures?  I think we can," Gutierrez said.
