Barack Obama formally stated that he is black in the 2010 census questionnaire, a White House spokesman told The New York Times.
The president, whose Kenyan father is black and whose white mother is from Kansas, checked the African-American category on the form, the newspaper reported.
There were more than a dozen options to the question about race with Obama choosing "Black, African Am., or Negro." The latter term was retained on the form as the Census Bureau believes some older blacks still use the word, the Times said.
Other options included checking both black and white, white only or "some other race", which he would then have been asked to identify.
In the 2000 census, about 6.8 million people reported being of two or more races, the Times said.
