Elizabeth Coulson is gunning for Mark Kirk's 10th District seat.

Coulson is a 13-year veteran of the Illinois House, and a resident of Glenview. Her late father-in-law, Robert Coulson, was also a politician, serving as Mayor of Waukegan and a State Senator for years.

She calls herself a moderate Republican in the mold of John Porter and Mark Kirk.

Coulson is a graduate of Wellesley College and has a background in healthcare -- she was a department chair at the Chicago Medical school before entering politics and is also a licensed physical therapist.

As a State Rep., Coulson has been an outspoken advocate for ethics reform and was the chief sponsor of legislation that would prohibit elected state officers from attaching their name or picture to billboards that display public service announcements.

Note: A previous version of this article mistakenly identified Elizabeth Coulson's political affiliation. Coulson is a Republican. The article also incorrectly identified Coulson's relationship with Robert Coulson, and her alma mater. Mr. Coulson is her father-in-law, and Coulson attended Wellesley College. NBCChicago.com regrets the errors.
