A small plane crash landed on Interstate 94 in southeastern Wisconsin on Monday evening after having some sort of mechanical issue as it tried to land at a nearby airport.
The Skydive Midwest plane -- tail number N821DA -- landed on the interstate between state highways 11 and 20 in Racine at about 6:30 p.m., officials said. Sylvania Airport in Sturtevant, Wis., is nearby.
Two people were on board, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Neither were seriously injured. The pilot refused treatment but the passenger was transported to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
"Once upon a time they were teaching flying out there, but what they do now is skydive almost every day. And that's the plane, I believe that's the plane ... that they use for sky diving," said Carl Harris, a pilot who watched as crews tended to the wreckage.
The plane is a fixed-wing B90 model registered to Direct Action Aviation out of Reno, according to FAA records.
Harris said he believes that same plane has had mechanical issues in the past.
"The landing gear collapsed on one side. I believe it was the left side. It collapsed during landing. They got it fixed. Nobody got hurt but they had to fix the prop and they had to check the engine and the wingtip. They fixed it and they've been flying it ever since," he said.
Eastbound traffic on Interstate 94 was being diverted off to East Frontage Road.
