Fundraising Campaign in Memory of Slain UK Lawmaker Breaks Record

An online fundraiser to generate funds for charities in the name of slain British lawmaker Jo Cox has raised more than $820,000, NBC News reported.

Cox, a rising star in the opposition Labour Party a mother of two, was fatally shot and stabbed in broad daylight Thursday after a meeting with her constituents in Birstall, near Leeds, northern England.

Donors have given a little more than 574,000 pounds ($824,000 USD) as of early Sunday local time. The money will go to three charities chosen by Cox's family.

Cox's alleged attacker, Thomas Mair, 52, was charged with murder and weapons related charges Saturday.
