Trump Meets With Palestinian Leader, Seeking Mideast Peace

President Donald Trump unexpectedly shifted years of U.S. policy and withheld clear support for an independent Palestine

President Donald Trump hosted the president of the Palestinian Authority Wednesday with Mideast peace a topic of discussion, NBC News reported.

Trump met with Mahmoud Abbas at the White House and the two each gave statements before a planned lunch.

Trump talked about proving wrong those who call a Mideast peace agreement "the toughest deal to make," while Abbas said, "It's about time for Israel to end its occupation of our people." He said its vision for peace involves two states.

Trump's stance on the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis is unclear, as he unexpectedly shifted years of U.S. policy and withheld clear support for an independent Palestine. Trump also has a cordial relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
