Police: Knife-Wielding Masked Man Invades Mother's Home Near Peoria

The man was allegedly carrying nine knieves when he invaded her home, but he did not take any money

A 27-year-old knife-wielding man who broke into his mother's home in central Illinois and tied her up in an attempted robbery has been arrested.

Pekin police spokesman Mike Eeten said Austin Smith was arrested Friday afternoon 90 minutes after fleeing his mother's home without any money. Authorities say the woman was unharmed.

Eeeten told The Pekin Daily Times that Smith was carrying nine knives when arrested. He said it was likely that the woman knew his identity despite the mask.

Smith was being held pending a bond hearing. It was not clear if he already had an attorney who could comment on the case.
