David Ortiz to Give Boston Students Wake-Up Calls

The service, which is available in September, will be to help students who are chronically absent from school or often late

Red Sox' David Ortiz will be teaming up with Boston Public Schools to deliver wake-up calls to select students in the school system.

The service, which is available in September, will be to help students who are chronically absent from school or often late.

Chronic absenteeism is a problem in the school district and BPS officials have been trying to tackle it. BPS officials cite national research saying missing out on school can lead to poor grades and dropouts.

They think this will help to encourage kids to hop out of bed and get to school.

Last year they did a successful trial run. Twenty-four students at Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers used the wake-up calls.

This coming school year, families can opt in their high and middle school students to receive the morning wakeup call from "Big Papi" during the final weeks of his last season, basically though the first month of school.

The calls are available in a few languages.
