A Comeback for Crystal Pepsi? Social Hints Fuel Speculation

Competitive eating star Kevin Strahle tweeted a letter from Pepsi on Tuesday.

Could Crystal Pepsi make a comeback?

The soda company hinted this week that it will reintroduce the mid-'90s soft drink, Ad Age reported. The clear cola, introduced in 1992, was pulled from market shelves soon after.

On Tuesday, competitive eating star Kevin Strahle tweeted an image he claimed was from Pepsi that stated: “We definitely hear you and your followers and we think you’ll all be happy with what’s in store.” Strahle has been a prominent supporter of bringing back the cola. A viral video of Strahle drinking a 20-year-old can of Crystal Pepsi has more than 11 million views on YouTube.

A PepsiCo spokeswoman confirmed the authenticity of the message to AdAge, adding, “We think Crystal Pepsi fans are going to be happy with what we have planned.”

Pepsi wouldn't be the only soda company going retro with its drink selection. Last year, Coca-Cola announced plans to bring back Surge, a caffeinated citrus soda meant to counter Pepsi’s Mountain Dew. Surge first launched in 1996 but was discontinued in 2003. Surge was made available on Amazon.com following a similar campaign by soda fans. The “SURGE Movement” Facebook fan page currently has more than 222,000 likes.
