Coast Guard Offloads $16 Million in Cocaine and Marijuana in Miami Beach

Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant will be offloading about 2,155 pounds of marijuana and 420 kilos of cocaine at Coast Guard Station Miami Beach.

About $16 million worth of cocaine and marijuana seized by the U.S. Coast Guard was offloaded in Miami Beach Friday morning.

Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant offloaded about 2,155 pounds of marijuana and 420 kilos of cocaine at Coast Guard Station Miami Beach.

The drugs were seized in two separate interdictions near Colombia as part of Operation Martillo, an international operation to counter drug trafficking.

"We have more than 2,100 pounds of marijuana and 420 kilos of cocaine that will not be making its way to the United States," Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Gabe Somma said.

The first seizure happened on Sept. 29, when the Royal Navy warship HMS Lancaster with a U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment Team aboard, located a 40-foot drug smuggling vessel with two people aboard in international waters north of San Andres Island, Colombia.

A helicopter spotted the people on the boat jettisoning several bales of drugs, and the smugglers were able to get away, but officers were able to recover 50 bales of marijuana from a debris field.

The second incident happened on Oct. 2, when another suspected smuggling vessel was spotted near San Andres Island. The officers were able to stop the vessel and board it, and found 15 bales of cocaine onboard, the Coast Guard said.

Four suspected smugglers were taken into custody.
