Brooklyn Student Drowns Going Over 100-Foot Waterfall

A college student from Brooklyn drowned after going over a 100-foot waterfall while tubing on a remote northern New York river.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office tells the Watertown Daily Times that divers recovered the body of 21-year-old Elliot Mullings late Monday morning, about 20 hours after he disappeared below Lampson Falls in the town of Clare.

Officials say Mullings was with other students from the State University at Canton floating on inner tubes in the sloping cascade at the Grasse River Recreation Area.

Police say the strong current and 59-degree water were likely factors in the drowning. Deputies say alcohol wasn't involved.

SUNY Canton officials say Mullings was a third-year student majoring in law enforcement.
