The couple named their son after their favorite college football team.

An Alabama couple said they are surprised by the flak they're getting on social media for the football-inspired name they gave to their newborn son.

Summer and Steven Steele, from Andalusia, Ala., named their son Krimson Tyde, after the Crimson Tide football team at the University of Alabama. The name caught people's attention on Twitter after a user posted a photo of the baby's birth announcement on the site earlier this week, according to reports.

"I'm very shocked, I didn't think people would make a very big deal about it," Krimson's mom Summer Steele told Alabama Media Group.

The couple said they named their son Krimson because they are big Alabama fans, and they slammed the public for criticizing their choice.

"To people speaking negatively about us naming him Krimson, it's not their child nor family member so if they have nothing nice to say they don't need to say nothing at all," Steele said, AL.com reported.

Krimson, who was born on Dec. 17, joins a slew of other Alabamians with parents who are die-hard Crimson Tide fans. A look into an online baby name database revealed that 35 of the 76 girls born in the U.S. in 2012 with the names Crimson, Krimson or Krymson were from Alabama, AL.com reported. Nine boys in the state went home with the name Crimson.
