6-Year-Old Dies After Being Pinned Under Tree Limb in Canton, Massachusetts

The tree limb fell from between 30 and 35 feet after a snowstorm, local fire officials said

A 6-year-old girl has died after being pinned under a tree limb Friday afternoon in Canton, Massachusetts, the child's family tells necn.

Canton Police confirm the child was hit by the limb in the yard of her family's Indian Lane home.

Family members confirmed to necn around 7:30 p.m. that young Kaleigh Kenyon had passed away.

"It's a fluke situation for our lovely little girl, who was at the prime of her life," said the girl's aunt, Lauri Moore. "She loves snow and she loves playing in it, and it's just awful."

"She was like, 'Oh, Daddy, let's go make a snowman,'" her brother, Nicholas Kenyon, said. "The next thing I know, a tree broke, fell on her. Him and I just ran at it, trying to lift her out of there."

Police responded around 2 p.m. A neighbor had gotten the girl out from under the tree and administered CPR.

Kaleigh Kenyon was transported in critical condition to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton. She was later transported to Boston Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Her family describes her as a high-spirited little girl. Her brother says their father was shaken as she was rushed to the hospital.

"The last thing he said to me was 'I'm sorry,'" Nicholas Kenyon said. "I was like, 'It's not your fault.'"

Fire officials said in a press conference that the weight of the snow caused the tree limb to fall from between 30 and 35 feet above the girl.

Police warned of collapsing trees and branches in Canton Friday. In the same community, a downed power line caused flames to burst out through the snow.
