Obama Accepts Shinseki's Resignation Amid VA Scandal

President Obama said Friday that "with considerable regret" he has accepted Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki’s resignation after meeting with him on Friday. Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Sloan Gibson has been named acting VA secretary until a permanent replacement can be found. Earlier in the day Shinseki apologized to veterans for "indefensible and unacceptable" treatment delays and said he is removing the senior leadership at the Phoenix VA facility at the epicenter of the scandal. "I cannot explain the lack of integrity among some of the leaders of our health care facilities," he said at a meeting of the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans in Washington, D.C. "This is something I rarely encountered during 38 years in uniform. And so I will not defend it, because it is indefensible, but I can take responsibility for it and I do."
