Worker Loses Arm in Construction Accident on Chicago's North Side

A 34-year-old construction worker’s left arm was amputated near his shoulder after a mishap inside an elevator shaft on Chicago's Near North Side Saturday afternoon.

It happened about 4:20 p.m. at a building under construction in the 700 block of North Hudson in the city's River North neighborhood, according to police and fire officials.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery Saturday night.

Police said it was an accident, and authorities continue to investigate.
