A Winter Weather Advisory was issued Thursday for several counties in the southern portion of the Chicago area and in northwest Indiana, with snow expected to impact the morning commute.
The advisory was in effect for Kankakee, Ford, Livingston and Iroquois counties in Illinois, as well as Newton, Jasper and Benton counties in Indiana, according to the National Weather Service. It was expected to last through through 12 p.m CST.
A few inches of slushy accumulation is possible in these areas, with slippery roads and hazardous travel expected to impact the morning rush hour.
Light snow began developing in the southern portion of the region early morning, mixed with a little light sleet or freezing rain to start, and gradually moving north.

The snow was expected to move north of the city to a line from Waukegan to DeKalb, but it appeared as though the areas along and south of I-80 are more favored for a longer period of snow. A band from Kankakee to Valparaiso, Indiana could bring as much as 1 to 3 inches of snow before clearing out around noon. Areas north will likely only see a dusting to half an inch.
The rest of the area will likely stay cloudy but dry and cold, with highs in the low to mid 30s.
Temperatures will slowly rise overnight for a Friday that isn't as cold as recent days, with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s.

The weekend brings the next chance for precipitation, with Saturday starting overcast before a mix of rain and snow showers that will likely change to all snow for a time, before shifting to a mix again late afternoon. Some accumulation will be possible.
The next few days heading into the holiday week look to be partly sunny, breezy and cold, with temperatures in the 30s, rising into the 40s by Thanksgiving.
